PESI posts 4th Quarter Ecosystems Forestry Grant data

The numbers are in, and it has been a very productive 4th Quarter for our Ecosystems Forestry Grant.  We completed both Cohort 4 Workshops, adding 6 new grant participants. All 6 plus 2 Cohort 2 teachers attended both workshop days. PESI Volunteers logged in over 130 volunteer hours supporting 30 different teacher requests for help with tree lessons, presentation preparations & final student presentations.  Q4 totals include; 14 teachers completing grant requirements, 461 students presenting to over 500 guests & 79 families helping students complete Home/School Tree Inventory Homework. Thank you to everyone who has participated in the grant and helped make this quarter so successful.

Website helpful for phenomena-based instruction

PESI supporter, Joan Gilbert, had the opportunity to attend a 4-day workshop with Brett Moulding, one of the authors of the web site #Going 3D with GRC . Brett has developed many strategies and resources to assist with 3 dimension teaching and learning, and has been a front runner in science education for decades.
“I thought I would share his website,” said Joan, ” – especially the first page with a very quick reminder about what and how phenomena are useful in classrooms, and outdoor learning.  I know many teachers are beginning to better understand the use of phenomena in instruction, and how motivating students to ask questions, gather information, and reason about and communicate their thinking is intricately tied to skilled use of phenomena.”

We hope you find his website interesting and useful in your classrooms.

Free Substitutes provided for 3rd grade and 5th & 6th grade Science teacher training at Cooper Center

The Cooper Center for Environmental Learning and Partners for Equitable Science Instruction (PESI) believe that supporting teachers who do science education in class is a critical way to support our organizational missions. That’s why, with the support of Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund, Cooper and PESI will offer two science professional development training sessions for classroom teachers or administrators.

Each course is presented free of charge and we also have funding available to cover the cost of substitute teachers. And…completion of a course entitles you to a FREE Camp Cooper field trip for the 2020-21 school year, including coverage for student fees and school bus transportation!

Each session is limited to 25 participants, so sign up today! The registration deadline is Monday, January 27th!
