ASTA Offering FREE Webinars in April

Build scientific understanding with free PBS LearningMedia resources!

ASTA is delighted to partner with AZ Public Media on Monday, April 12th. This free webinar will focus on their free science resources that you can use in your classroom.

Date/Time:  Monday, April 12th, 4:00 – 5:15 PM

Cost: Free

Presenter: Cheryl Gerken, Educational Outreach Coordinator, AZPM

Description: PBS LearningMedia offers over 5,000 standards-aligned Pre-K to 12 science videos, interactives, lesson plans, and activities. In this collaborative course we will explore the various ways to utilize this multi-layered website. Participants will be given time to explore the site, with the goal of creating a portfolio of resources that can be used in the classroom as part of the inquiry cycle. Other PBS educational resources will also be explored, as well as ideas for integrating technology into the classroom to motivate and empower students.

Constructing Explanations & Designing Solutions: 1 of the 8 SEP’s in the AZ Science Standards

Date:  Thursday, April 22nd, 4:00 – 5:00 PM

Cost:  Free

Facilitator:  Sara Torres

Are the explanations and solutions your students are constructing meeting the expectation of this SEP?  Join this webinar to find out.

Description:  A goal of science education is for students to construct scientific explanations that are supported by evidence for the causes of phenomena and design solutions to engineering problems that go beyond tinkering and hands-on construction. During this webinar, participants will determine the role of this SEP in  learning science and be able to describe how this practice progresses throughout a K-12 science curriculum.

ASU Modeling Instruction in CHEMISTRY II: LIVE ONLINE. June 7th to 25th, 2021 CHM594

ASU will offer Modeling Instruction in CHEMISTRY II: LIVE ONLINE (via Zoom)

The course is for chemistry teachers in high school and community college.

Modeling Instruction in Chemistry II  (CHM 594 iCourse. 3 ASU graduate credits optional):
   June 7 to 25, 2021
Zoom meetings: MTWTh 8:30 am to 12:30 pm
Instructor: Larry Dukerich, original Modeling Workshop leader and leader of Modeling Chemistry course development/refinement team.
Co-leader: Erica Posthuma, University High School in Carmel, Indiana, and an ACS Fellow.
Prerequisite: Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I

This course is for teachers who wish to investigate a model-based approach to concepts not addressed in the Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I course.  These include an evidence-based treatment of the internal structure of the atom, periodicity and covalent bonding, intermolecular forces, equilibrium and acids & bases.  This should appeal to teachers of an honors or AP course whose students can move through basic concepts more rapidly. The course builds on models, pedagogy, and content of previous units.

Modeling Instruction teaches students to think, to be autonomous life-long learners. It infuses 21st century skills into rigorous disciplinary content.

Also offered this summer at ASU:

Modeling Instruction in Chemistry I (iCourse, June 7 to July 13) & 4 COURSES in physics!
